Precision Under Pressure: Cranes, Traffic, & Prefab Trusses.

Ever wonder what it actually takes to bring a major build together on a busy arterial route? It’s about a lot more than just hammers and nails.

Recently, our team executed a massive prefab truss installation right on Glen Eira Road. Transporting heavy structural components to the site and craning them perfectly into place requires absolute precision, airtight planning, and the seamless coordination of multiple expert teams.

This specific site threw every logistical challenge at us:

School Zone: Navigating strict delivery windows to ensure student and pedestrian safety—meaning we could only operate during a tight 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM window.

Tight Access: Despite being a main road, we had to maneuver a 22-ton mobile crane into a considerably tight two-lane setup.

Overhead Obstacles: Carefully threading massive prefab trusses through existing street canopies and trees without causing damage.

Because of these compounding factors, the groundwork for a single day of craning starts two full months in advance.

To get those trusses safely from the transport truck to their final position, we manage a whole ecosystem of external professionals and regulatory bodies. Here is a look at the behind-the-scenes logistics (and costs) required just to get the crane on site safely:

VicRoads Arterial Works Permit: Working on a major arterial road means navigating strict state regulations. We have to go through the very time-consuming process of applying for a Working Within the Road Reserve (WWRR) permit just to secure our Memorandum of Authorisation (MOA). This crucial step costs nearly $730.

Road Occupation Permit: Securing the physical space to operate the crane and manage the site safely over the required period added another $1,700.

Traffic Management: Keeping the public safe and Melbourne moving is our first priority. Designing the Traffic Management Plan and bringing in certified traffic controllers on the day cost approximately $2,200.

Crane Hire & Crew: Bringing in the 22-ton mobile crane, complete with an experienced operator and dogman to guide the load safely through the trees and traffic, added roughly $1,500.

That is over $6,100 and weeks of lead time invested in logistics alone—before a single truss is even lifted.

As professional builders, we don’t just build—we manage the complexity. Coordinating multiple contractors, navigating strict council regulations, and ensuring absolute safety in the tightest of conditions is what we do every day.

When you build with us, we handle the heavy lifting—literally and figuratively.
